Biography:
Kelly earned her Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Writing from Bowling Green State University in 2019 and her B.A. and M.A. in English from Gannon University in 2013 and 2015, respectively. Her teaching and research involve the intersections of first-year writing instruction, writing program administration, embodied rhetorics, feminist research, and digital/multimodal methods. Her article, “Toward a Rhetoric of Body as Space,” investigates how bodies contribute to communication through historical-cultural, rhetorical, and physical means, employing the character Precious from Push (Sapphire, 1996) as a bodily space. Building on this orientation to embodied rhetoric, her dissertation, “Rhetorical Embodied Performance in/as Writing Instruction: Practicing Identity and Lived Experience in TA Education” explores how a group of teaching assistants (TAs) form embodied identities as teachers of writing at a given institution. Though Kelly has always wanted to be a teacher, she briefly considered a career in journalism and went on to become Editor-in-Chief of her college newspaper. Kelly grew up in Erie, PA, which boasts about 100” of annual snowfall.
