Ethics and Animals: A Discussion with Peter Singer

Peter Singer's ground-breaking book, Animal Liberation, was first published in 1975. In this talk, Singer will summarize the key ideas, including the ethics on which the book is based, and ask what progress we have made, if any, since then. There will be ample time for questions and discussion.

The event is free and open to Minnesota State, Mankato students, faculty, and staff, as well as to members of the Mankato community. No registration is required to attend the in-person watch party, but zoom attendees must register with an mnsu.edu email address. About Peter Singer
Peter Singer, often hailed as the "world's most influential living philosopher," gained prominence for his groundbreaking work on animal ethics, sparking the modern animal rights movement with his influential book "Animal Liberation" published in 1975. He is known also for his controversial critique of the sanctity of life ethics in bioethics. In 2021, he was honored with the Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture, for his "widely influential and intellectually rigorous work in reinvigorating utilitarianism as part of academic philosophy and as a force for change in the world." Alongside his academic pursuits, Singer co-founded Animals Australia and has been a longstanding advocate for vegetarianism alongside his wife, Renata, since 1971.
